Description

Officers from the Roman legion centuria (unit of about 80 men). Year is around 180AD, during the wars of Marcus Aurelianus at Danube.

From the left: Signifer, centurion and optio
Roman army had a good command structure and lots of low-ranking officers to lead units. The main tactical unit was a cohort which had six centurians in it, 80 mens strong each. The smallest unit was contubernum with 8 men who shared a tent or the room ain the barracks. This clear command structure made the legions a very effective fighting units and especially the centurions were highly valued due to their skill and fierciness in battle, although it was also important that they were no hot-headed since they were expected to hold the lines and encourage the men.
